Wellbeing company Sniff Sigh Yawn’s founder Joel Jelen has just launched his first book Why Does Daddy Breathe Funny? aimed at educating children and parents on the negative effects to our health of habitually bad breathing.
Joel who suffered as a child through mouth breathing and chest breathing wants future generations of young people and their guardians to avoid the pitfalls of dysfunctional breathing and avoid the suffering he went through.
“In 2023 there is still too little attention paid to the importance of how we breathe although from a preventative medicine point of view, there are more doctors within lifestyle medicine stressing its importance.”
Joel recalls seeing progressive physician Dr Len McEwan in 1995 who identified his condition but explains that he was decades ahead of his time.
“From a layperson point of view, if you take your breathing for granted, you’ll only think about it if you have a respiratory condition like asthma or feel like you can’t breathe if you suffer from sleep apnoea or anxiety.
“What many doctors don’t tell us and what we don’t get educated on e.g. at school is how improper breathing can lead to more than 150 medical conditions.
“I’m passionate about getting breathing education into schools, colleges and universities as well as building on the work I’ve already done in the workplace with many firms. September onwards will be the beginning of helping primary and secondary schoolchildren.
“It will enable the legacy of Dr. McEwan’s work to continue and latterly that of global expert Patrick McKeown who i trained with to help raise awareness of the power of efficient, optimal breathing for our physical and mental health and vitality.”
