Legendary composer Gavin Bryars to celebrate 80th birthday with Liverpool concert

Legendary British composer and double bass player Gavin Bryars will mark his 80th birthday with a celebratory concert in Liverpool this December.

The acclaimed musician will make a special guest appearance at Liverpool Hope University’s Capstone Theatre on Friday 1 December when Serbian piano group, Ensemble for Different New Music (ADNM), will be performing his compositions as they make their UK debut.

Featuring five compositions, the concert programme has been carefully curated to include a selection of work which demonstrates the incredible versatility and enduring quality of Bryars’ piano compositions.

It will include a performance for four keyboards of a new arrangement of the rarely performed piece White’s SS and a performance of a new four keyboard arrangement of My First Homage.

Bryars will join members of the ensemble on stage to perform his 1977 composition Out of Zaleski’s Gazebo, before giving members of the audience a chance to pick his brains in a live Q&A.

One of the most important and influential composers of our time, Bryars is admired for his innovative contributions to contemporary classical music and remains a leading figure in the world of modern composition.

His diverse career has encompassed minimalist, experimental, and avant-garde compositions, including the iconic Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet, which featured a looped recording of a homeless man singing and earned him widespread recognition.

Capstone Theatre Creative Director, Neil Campbell, said: “To have someone of Gavin Bryars’ stature appearing at our theatre for his 80th birthday is a great honour and it is also wonderful to host Ensemble for Different New Music for their first ever UK performance. It will be a very special evening of music indeed and one to savour.”

Ensemble for Different New Music Celebrates Gavin Bryars’ 80th Birthday takes place at the Capstone Theatre on Friday 1 December from 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now and are priced at £20 or £15 for Concessions.
